The presence of a rounded spine alone doesn't tell us very much. The starting position, movement, organisation of the limbs and relationship between different parts of the body all contribute to the identity of the exercise.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;">What interests me is the point at which a detail stops being a preference and becomes part of the exercise itself.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;">That distinction matters if we want to preserve a recognisable method while allowing room for the considerable judgement involved in teaching it.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;">It also becomes particularly interesting when we compare exercises across the apparatus. Familiar movement relationships appear in different circumstances, but the apparatus, spring resistance, starting position and sequence of movement give each exercise its own character.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;">Understanding those relationships can deepen our appreciation of the method without requiring us to pretend that every exercise is interchangeable.</p>
