The Beginner's Guide to Classical Pilates

What Is Classical Pilates?

If you're new to Pilates, you've probably come across lots of different styles, classes and opinions. Reformer Pilates, mat Pilates, contemporary Pilates, Classical Pilates—it can be difficult to know where to begin.

The first thing to understand is that Pilates was created by one man: Joseph Pilates. Over many decades he developed a complete system of exercises designed to improve strength, flexibility, coordination and overall health.

Today, that original system is known as Classical Pilates.

As a Classical Pilates teacher, my aim is to teach the method as a complete system while adapting it to the individual in front of me. Every body is different, and good teaching is about helping each person progress safely and confidently.

More Than Just the Reformer

Many people discover Pilates through reformer classes, but the reformer is only one piece of the method.

Classical Pilates includes work on the mat alongside a range of specialised apparatus, including the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector and smaller pieces of equipment.

Each apparatus has a specific purpose, and together they create a balanced programme that develops strength, mobility, control and confidence in movement.

A System That Builds Over Time

One of the defining features of Classical Pilates is that it is taught as a system.

Exercises aren't selected at random. Each movement prepares you for the next, helping your body develop strength, coordination and control in a logical progression.

You don't need to be fit, flexible or experienced to begin. The method meets you where you are and gradually develops your abilities over time.

Why Choose Private Lessons?

Private lessons allow the programme to be tailored specifically to you.

Whether you're recovering from injury, improving athletic performance, addressing postural issues or simply looking to move and feel better, each lesson is designed around your individual needs and goals.

As your confidence grows, the programme evolves with you.

I've been teaching in the UK and internationally for more than twenty years.

My teaching is rooted in the Classical Pilates Method and shaped by decades of study, daily practice and ongoing mentorship. I continue to study regularly with my own teachers because I believe great teachers never stop learning.

My goal is simple: to help people move well, feel stronger and enjoy the process of learning what their bodies are capable of.
